Arun Gawli Released From Nagpur Jail on Supreme Court Interim Bail

The court cited prolonged incarceration in allowing conditional release pending an appeal scheduled for February 2026.

Overview

  • After completing prison formalities, Gawli walked out of Nagpur Central Jail around 12:30 pm and was flown to Mumbai under tight security.
  • The Supreme Court granted bail on August 28, noting that the 76-year-old had spent more than 17 years in custody with his appeal still pending.
  • The interim bail is subject to conditions set by the trial court, and prosecutors may seek cancellation if terms are breached or new offences are alleged.
  • Gawli is serving a life sentence for the 2007 murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar, a conviction returned in 2012 under MCOCA and upheld by the Bombay High Court in 2019.
  • The apex court has not ruled on the merits of his appeal, which it has listed for final hearing in February 2026.
