Art Deco Centenary Showcase Opens in Mumbai With Citywide Walks and Events

Organisers present a MumbaiMiami collaboration as a catalyst for public appreciation that strengthens protection of Deco precincts.

Overview

  • The exhibition From Marine Drive to Ocean Drive is on view at the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum through Nov. 25, curated by Atul Kumar after a debut in Miami.
  • The citywide programme features guided Deco walks, a speaker series, film screenings, an Eros cinema tour, workshops in sketching and typography, and the Churchgate Street Rewind block event from Nov. 7–16.
  • Maharashtra cultural affairs minister Ashish Shelar inaugurated the Mumbai leg as municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and museum director Tasneem Zakaria Mehta called for shared stewardship of the heritage.
  • Organisers underscore Mumbai’s status as home to one of the largest Art Deco clusters globally, commonly reported as second only to Miami.
  • Reporting highlights gaps in legal protection and ongoing decay of less prominent Deco buildings beyond South Bombay’s main streets, including areas such as Churchgate, Shivaji Park and Vile Parle.
