Overview

• Fire crews responded around 7:30 p.m. Monday to the 3700 block of Chartwell Drive and found a man dead after extinguishing the blaze, with identification and cause of death pending from the Bexar County Medical Examiner.
• SAPD says the blaze is under arson investigation, and a woman at the residence reported flames and said her son was inside, whom police identified in a preliminary report as a suspect.
• Call records show six 911 calls from the home starting around 3 p.m., including statements that the caller was suicidal and armed; officers tried to make contact multiple times and later disengaged, and police note 11 prior calls to the property.
• The last call from the residence was logged at 4:17 p.m., roughly three hours before the fire response, and investigators believe the garage was the likely origin.
• Three dogs were rescued from the home, one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion, and no other injuries were reported.
