Arrests Follow Spate of Child Sexual Assault Cases Across India

Authorities are using POCSO and the new BNS to accelerate arrests and coordinate medical and counselling support.

Overview

  • Rajkot police arrested a 35-year-old farm worker who, according to the SP, confessed to abducting and brutally assaulting a 6–7-year-old; the child is reported stable in hospital.
  • Pune officers detained an 18-year-old within two hours of an FIR for allegedly raping a 14-year-old he lured on a motorcycle; BNS and POCSO sections were invoked and survivor support arranged.
  • A 40-year-old constable was arrested for allegedly raping a woman inside Palghar’s Kasa police station, and the station in-charge was transferred.
  • In Andhra Pradesh’s Mummidivaram, three people were arrested after a Class 10 girl was taken from her hostel by impersonators and raped at a lodge, with the accused produced before court.
  • Separate probes reported swift action elsewhere, with a Doda madrassa teacher arrested within three hours of a complaint and two Ulhasnagar inmates detained, while Tirupati police are conducting a manhunt for autorickshaw driver Sai Kumar.
