Arrests and Seizures Follow Series of Violent Incidents in Winnipeg

Investigators are seeking tips through Crime Stoppers to move the remaining cases forward.

  • Winnipeg police are probing two downtown assaults in which victims were struck with a brick near Fort Street and Broadway and with a broken beer bottle on Portage Avenue, with Crime Stoppers releasing images for identification only.
  • Officers arrested an 18-year-old and a 25-year-old after a 36-year-old man was stabbed near Main Street and St. John’s Avenue on Aug. 22, with the victim stabilized in hospital and both suspects charged with aggravated assault and held in custody.
  • A Portage Avenue traffic stop on Aug. 22 led to the seizure of fentanyl valued at nearly $18,000, a replica handgun, knives and cash, with a 19-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man facing drug and weapons charges and released on undertakings.
  • Police arrested 28-year-old Julian Joseph Wood less than an hour after an attempted robbery at a Stafford Street grocery store where a security guard was assaulted, charging him with robbery, weapon possession, obstructing a peace officer and multiple breaches as he remains in custody.
  • Portage la Prairie RCMP, supported by the Emergency Response Team, arrested a 52-year-old after a hatchet incident at an apartment on Saskatchewan Avenue East, charging him with uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and resisting or obstructing a police officer.
