Arrests Across States and Tough POCSO Sentences Mark Latest Response to Sexual Assault Cases

Fresh arrests alongside lengthy sentences under BNS and POCSO signal an accelerated legal response.

Overview

  • In Maharashtra, police arrested a Palghar constable over an alleged rape at police quarters, detained two girls after a 14-year-old was assaulted in a Thane observation home, and took into custody an 18-year-old accused of raping a Class 9 student in Pune.
  • In Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda, madrasa teacher Nasir Majeed was booked under BNS and POCSO and arrested within three hours after a complaint that he raped a minor.
  • In Rajkot district, Gujarat, police arrested 35-year-old farmworker Ramsingh after a 6–7-year-old identified him in a case where she was abducted and grievously injured with a metal rod.
  • In Faridabad, Haryana, a neighbour was arrested over the abduction and murder of a five-year-old, with possible sexual assault to be confirmed by postmortem.
  • Special POCSO courts delivered heavy sentences in separate earlier cases, including 20 years in Ghaziabad, 25 years in Jalpaiguri, and 20 years in Jhansi.
