Arrest After Rotterdam Explosion as Power Failure Cripples Utrecht Traffic

Investigators are examining whether the suspect is linked to previous attacks at the same Kralingen address.

Overview

  • An explosion around 13:00 Sunday at a flat on Ocarinalaan in Rijswijk blew out part of a fourth‑floor gallery, ignited a fire that was quickly extinguished, and caused no injuries as authorities assess damage and arrange temporary housing.
  • Just before 06:00 Monday an explosive detonated at a portico on Berkelstraat in RotterdamKralingen, and police arrested a 20‑year‑old Rotterdam man shortly afterward as they probe ties to earlier blasts and a shooting at the address in May.
  • Since about 03:00 Monday a power failure at national and regional traffic control centers knocked out matrix signs and kept spitsstroken closed on key routes around Utrecht, displaying 120 km/h where 100 applies and causing long delays.
  • Police said drivers who followed the displayed 120 km/h during the malfunction will not receive fines, and a mobile speed camera on the A27 near Hollandse Rading was withdrawn.
  • By early evening Rijkswaterstaat reported the matrix‑sign outage was resolved and systems were functioning again after a day of disruption.
