Overview

• Arno Engels, 39, appeared at Lewes Crown Court on 19 September over the death of 80-year-old Anthony Scarrott and was remanded in custody after not entering a plea.
• A provisional trial date was set for 9 March next year, with a plea and trial preparation hearing scheduled for 5 December.
• Prosecutors told the court that Engels and Mr Scarrott resided together at a flat in Worthing.
• Mr Scarrott was found seriously injured during a welfare check on Westcourt Road on 11 September and died in hospital on 14 September.
• Sussex Police say they are not seeking other suspects, maintain a presence at the address, and are appealing for witnesses, particularly a woman in a red jacket seen between 7:20pm and 7:40pm on 11 September.
