Arnhem Opens Airborne Weekend With New John Frost Plaques and Evening Tribute

Residents can follow the ceremonies on Omroep Gelderland with schedules shaped by planned road closures.

Overview

  • Two plaques honoring Lieutenant-Colonel John Frost were unveiled on the John Frost Bridge by Mayor Ahmed Marcouch and Caroline Frost, replacing a stolen marker as the restored mosaic returns to the monument.
  • Hundreds of paratroopers from multiple countries conducted practice jumps over the Ginkelse Heide ahead of Saturday’s commemorative drop.
  • The Airborneplein remembrance begins at 19:00, followed by the free Bridge to Liberation concert at 20:30 on the Rijnkade, with both events broadcast live by Omroep Gelderland on TV and online.
  • Traffic measures include the John Frost Bridge closing to pedestrians and cyclists north-to-south from 17:00 and to all cars from 17:30, with partial reopening at 23:59 and full reopening late Saturday, plus timed closures on nearby streets.
  • In his commemoration address, Mayor Marcouch saluted veterans and linked Arnhem’s wartime sacrifices to current conflicts, calling on citizens to work actively for peace.
