Army Tests Mobile 81mm Mortar on Infantry Squad Vehicles in Hawaii

Two test systems now move to November JPMRC drills for further evaluation.

Overview

  • Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment conducted Oct. 20–25 simulated combat scenarios with the Scorpion Light 81mm mortar at Schofield Barracks as part of Transformation in Contact 2.0.
  • Mounted on the Infantry Squad Vehicle–Utility, the system fired and displaced in under two minutes, and each vehicle carried the mortar plus 72 rounds, according to the manufacturer.
  • An automated digital fire-control suite enabled rapid, precise retargeting and can ingest targeting data from observers or aircraft, the company reported.
  • The integrated platform is light enough for internal CH-47 carriage or UH-60 sling load, and two test systems will be transported by C-17 to the Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center exercises in November across Hawaii and Luzon.
  • The Army has not announced an adoption decision, while U.S. Army Pacific says TiC 2.0 is expanding to larger formations and the maker cites prior demonstrations, including with the Marine Corps.
