Army Selects Spike NLOS for Mobile Long-Range Strike After European Apache Demo

The down-select moves the effort into safety testing with cost projections under review following vendor pricing.

Overview

  • Lockheed Martin’s Spike NLOS won the first phase of the M‑LRPSM directed requirement to prototype a precision strike system for Infantry Brigade Combat Teams.
  • Within days of the award, a ground-launched demo at Dugway Proving Grounds scored three direct hits, including two against obstructed targets without line of sight.
  • The U.S. Army’s 12th Combat Aviation Brigade fired two Spike NLOS missiles from an AH‑64E in Poland against sea targets at up to 25 km, marking the weapon’s first employment in Europe.
  • Spike NLOS is already qualified on the AH‑64E under the Long Range Precision Munitions requirement and has been integrated on the JLTV for U.S. Special Operations Command.
  • The competition now advances to a phase focused on safety confirmation and a narrower field of contenders, while the Army revises earlier FYDP plans that had projected about $93 million.
