Army Selects Multiple Commercial Drones After Platoon-Level Fly-Off

Manufacturing-readiness checks begin with priority units picking systems for near-term fielding.

Overview

  • The Project Manager for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems ran platoon-level short-range reconnaissance (SRR) flight demonstrations at Clarke Range that concluded on Monday and produced initial vendor selections.
  • PM UAS chose systems from Parrot, Skydio, Skycutter, Teal and Vantage Robotics to enter manufacturing-readiness assessment so companies can show they can build at scale.
  • Soldiers from Transformation in Contact priority units tested medium-range reconnaissance (MRR) Group 2 drones and were allowed to select up to two systems each from the UAS Marketplace for their units.
  • Those unit-selected MRR systems will be fielded and receive unit-level training over the coming months as manufacturing-readiness work continues for the SRR picks.
  • The UAS Marketplace model gives units hands-on comparison of vetted systems, speeds buying by letting operational users choose gear, and uses multi-vendor competition to keep options current for platoon- and company-level reconnaissance needs.
