Army Says 4 Soldiers Believed Dead After Black Hawk Crash Near JBLM

Recovery remains difficult because of remote terrain and a wildfire at the site.

Overview

  • U.S. Army Special Operations Command said four members of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment were aboard the MH-60 and are believed to be dead.
  • The helicopter went down around 9 p.m. Wednesday during a routine training flight in the Summit Lake/Capitol Forest area west of Olympia.
  • A post-crash fire grew to roughly 1–1.25 acres, initially forcing deputies and rescuers to pull back from the wreckage.
  • Recovery operations involve military teams, local law enforcement and firefighters, with a temporary flight restriction in place to secure the airspace.
  • The cause is under investigation, and officials have withheld the soldiers’ names pending family notification, with Lt. Gen. Jonathan Braga offering condolences to the unit’s families and teammates.
