Army Redesignates FCC as Futures and Autonomous Systems Command to Centralize Autonomy Effort

The move centralizes research, acquisition, and corps-level experiments to speed fielding of autonomous systems.

Overview

  • Gen. Christopher LaNeve redesignated the Army’s Futures and Concepts Command as the U.S. Army Futures and Autonomous Systems Command on Tuesday, making it a three‑star command to consolidate related R&D and experimentation organizations.
  • Acting Secretary Adam Telle’s Oct. 1 memo directed creation of a single Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Autonomy to control purchases and ordered priority fielding of specified autonomous capabilities by fiscal 2028.
  • FASCOM will run corps-level experiments to develop force concepts, including tests of autonomous fires, watercraft resupply, armored reconnaissance, obstacle breaching, aerial ISR and lift, and pairing manned and unmanned rotary aircraft.
  • The Army plans immediate workforce and training changes, assigning some of the first 390A robotic technicians to experimental formations, expanding UAS and robotics specialties across units, and naming Fort Rucker as a UAS Autonomy Center of Excellence.
  • A separate four‑star Pentagon Autonomous Warfare Command remains a proposal that would require Congress for service-like authorities and funding, and key details such as final budgets, basing, and how FASCOM will integrate with that higher command are still unresolved.
