Army Opens Applications for New Enlisted Space Operations Specialty

The move creates a dedicated enlisted pipeline for tactical space expertise to support joint forces.

Overview

  • Applications are open Jan. 1–April 30 to enlisted soldiers in grades E-4 through E-9 across the active Army, National Guard and Reserve, and applicants must be able to obtain a Top-Secret clearance.
  • Selection board results are expected in the summer of 2026, with initial selectees transitioning to the new MOS starting Oct. 1.
  • Training for 40D will begin Oct. 1 at the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense School in Colorado Springs, preparing soldiers for space, high-altitude and missile-defense missions.
  • The Army is planning about 1,000 positions initially with potential growth to roughly 1,500 by 2032, with assignments available in CONUS, OCONUS and across major combatant commands.
  • Tactical space operations specialists will support multidomain operations by disrupting adversary capabilities through the electromagnetic spectrum and countering space-domain threats.
