Army Opens 91-Km High-Altitude HanleChumar Road in Ladakh to Public

Built by the BRO’s Project Himank, the high-altitude link is intended to bolster border logistics.

Overview

  • The Indian Army announced on its official X handle that the 91-kilometre Hanle–Chumar road is now open for public traffic in Ladakh.
  • Constructed by Project Himank of the Border Roads Organisation, the route is credited as a strategic asset for forces along the border.
  • The Army said the road will improve local connectivity and tourism by linking Hanle Observatory, Kyun Tso Lake and Chilling Tso Lake with onward access to Tso Moriri.
  • The alignment spans extreme elevations of roughly 14,500 to 17,200 feet and crosses the high Salsa La Pass.
  • Officials described the project as enhancing operational readiness while supporting socio-economic growth in remote areas of Ladakh.
