Overview

• Pvt. Andrey Okunev, assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment, was fatally injured on Sept. 5 during range training and was pronounced dead at 10:33 a.m.
• Medical personnel from General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital responded on site, and officials said no other injuries occurred.
• Fort Leonard Wood law enforcement and the Army Criminal Investigation Division are conducting parallel investigations into the circumstances.
• Maj. Gen. Chris Beck offered condolences and said chaplains, grief counselors and medical professionals are supporting the unit and those affected.
• Okunev was from the Long Beach, California area, where he volunteered as a youth soccer referee, and his basic training cohort was scheduled to graduate on Oct. 2.
