Overview

  • Indian Army has formally asked DRDO’s VRDE to conduct extensive field trials of the 155 mm/52 calibre Mounted Gun System to ensure rapid shoot-and-scoot capability across diverse terrain.
  • The truck-mounted MGS, derived from the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System, demonstrated a firing rate of six rounds per minute and engagement ranges exceeding 45 km during internal tests at Balasore and Pokhran.
  • DRDO has cleared the first-of-product-model design test for the ATAGS, supporting induction of an 18-gun regiment by February 2027 under the ministry’s ₹6,900 crore order for 307 guns and 327 towing vehicles.
  • Officials estimate the Army’s total requirement for mobile and towed 155 mm/52 calibre systems may rise to 700–800 units as part of a wider artillery modernization strategy.
  • Developed by DRDO and transferred to Bharat Forge for production, the MGS integrates an 8×8 armoured platform, stabilisers and electronic controllers with up to 85% indigenous content.
