Overview
- The Army announced in late June 2026 that it has created a dedicated Space Operations Branch to consolidate its space workforce into a single, permanent career field.
- The branch unites Functional Area 40 space operations officers with a newly created enlisted Military Occupational Specialty, 40D Tactical Space Operations Specialist, to provide clear career paths from specialist through sergeant major.
- The 40D MOS takes effect Oct. 1, 2026, and eligible soldiers in grades E-3 through E-9 will be able to request reclassification through a central selection process.
- The Space and Missile Defense Center of Excellence will standardize training and education for officers and enlisted personnel to produce deployable space professionals who can deliver navigation, communications, missile warning and counterspace effects to tactical units.
- Army leaders say the branch will relieve Air Defense Artillery, Signal and Military Intelligence branches of temporary space duties, support growing multidomain task forces and theater strike groups, and better posture the service for competition with near-peer adversaries.
