Arms Cache With AK-47 and IED Found in Sundargarh Forest

Authorities say forensic examination of explosives and communication devices could help map Maoist supply lines and past movements

Overview

  • Police located a concealed Maoist dump in Silkuta Reserve Forest on Monday after a joint search by local forces turned up weapons and explosive-related items.
  • The search was launched after surrendered Naxals gave specific information during interrogation that pointed officers to the site.
  • Officials recovered an AK-47, a CM 9mm carbine, an IED container, 15 detonators, magazines, walkie-talkies and other camp equipment that will be catalogued and examined.
  • The District Voluntary Force and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad led the operation with coordination between Odisha and Jharkhand security personnel and the BDDS handled explosive detection and safe removal.
  • Concealed forest dumps are a known Maoist tactic to sustain operations so investigators will use device data and forensic testing to try to trace past cadre movements and supply links.
