Armenia Opens Case Over Gyumri City Hall Unrest as Pretrial Arrest Sought for Mayor

Officials describe the clashes as obstruction of a bribery probe.

Overview

  • Armenia’s Investigative Committee opened a criminal case over participation in mass disorders, obstruction of official activity, and obstruction of justice tied to the Oct. 20 confrontation at Gyumri’s municipality.
  • The Anti-Corruption Committee carried out investigative actions at the city hall with police support during the operation to detain Mayor Vardan Gukasyan on bribery allegations.
  • Police dispersed residents and municipal staff who tried to block the operation, removed the mayor from the building, and detained about two dozen people for disobeying lawful orders.
  • Gukasyan was transported to Yerevan and is held at the Anti-Corruption Committee facility, where an ambulance arrived; his lawyer cites missed medication and says he denies the charges.
  • The Anti-Corruption Committee says it has initiated public prosecution in the bribery case, detained eight people including the mayor, and will seek his pretrial arrest in court.
