Armed Gang Loots SBI Branch in Vijayapura, Escapes With Nearly 59 Kg of Gold and Rs 8 Crore

Police launched a cross-border search after the suspected getaway car was found in Pandharpur, Maharashtra.

Overview

  • More than five masked men in military-style outfits stormed the Chadachan SBI branch on Tuesday, carrying country-made pistols and sharp weapons.
  • Employees, including the manager and cashier, were tied up during the heist and were threatened to stop any alarm from being raised, according to local reports.
  • Preliminary assessments indicate roughly 58–59 kg of gold and about Rs 8 crore in cash were stolen, though officials have not confirmed a final figure.
  • The suspects fled in a vehicle later recovered in Pandharpur, and Karnataka and Maharashtra police have begun a joint manhunt with no arrests announced yet.
  • The robbery comes months after a separate Canara Bank burglary in the same district involving 59 kg of pledged gold, for which a former branch manager was arrested as the alleged mastermind.
