Overview

  • The exhibition is fully installed and opens July 10 at 7 p.m. at the Celda Contemporánea of the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana.
  • Admission is free with weekday hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the exhibition continues through August 30.
  • The series draws on Georges Bataille’s 1928 novel and Baroque painting traditions to center its visual-sensory exploration on the eye.
  • The 25 oval-framed oil paintings on masonite or linen are disrupted by dripping, pastes and embedded objects such as seashells, fabrics, hair and horns.
  • Curator Javier Ubieta describes the work as probing the thin line between sacred ecstasy and primal desire to question the dual nature of humanity.
