Armagh Bar Petrol-Bomb Suspect Remanded on Attempted Murder Charges

A detective told a Newry court the accused shouted 'trick or treat' before throwing a lit device toward two people.

  • John Patrick Nixon, 38, appeared at Newry Magistrates' Court charged with two counts of attempted murder, arson with intent to endanger life, possession of a knife in a public place, and three counts of criminal damage.
  • Two men, one in his 30s and one in his 60s, suffered burn injuries in the Toby Jug bar on Irish Street shortly before 9pm on Monday, and police said one has since been discharged.
  • The court heard the bar was busy, including children present, and CCTV shows a man lighting a rag in a bottle before flames are seen at the doorway.
  • A detective said further CCTV allegedly shows the accused buying petrol earlier that evening and that a petrol bomb and a plastic bag containing a knife were found at an address where he was arrested.
  • Nixon was remanded in custody to appear again by video link on September 2, and detectives appealed for witnesses or footage from 7pm to 9pm to call 101 quoting reference 1862 18/08/25.
