Armadillo Willy’s BBQ Shutters Three Bay Area Locations, Leaves Only San Mateo Open

The shutdowns came after years of pandemic-driven revenue declines coupled with sales-tax debts that depleted the chain’s capital.

Overview

  • Armadillo Willy’s closed its Sunnyvale, Santa Clara and San Jose restaurants on June 17, cutting its Bay Area presence to a single site.
  • Earlier this year, the chain had already shuttered its Los Altos location on January 31 and its Dublin outpost on April 19.
  • Founded in 1983 in Cupertino, Armadillo Willy’s expanded to multiple Bay Area locations before the recent contractions.
  • President Kevin Roberts said the company lost about a third of its sales during the pandemic and faced seized funds over unpaid sales taxes.
  • The remaining San Mateo restaurant at 2260 Bridgepointe Parkway will continue regular service and catering operations.
