Arm to Design 2nm Chips at New Bengaluru Facility, Minister Says

The announcement signals confidence in India’s design talent nurtured by expanded university access to EDA tools.

Overview

  • Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated Arm’s Bengaluru office and said the team there will design two‑nanometer chips.
  • He highlighted India Semiconductor Mission metrics, citing EDA tool access at 278 institutions and 28 chips developed so far.
  • Vaishnaw said Arm’s 2nm effort would make it the second firm after Renesas to reach this milestone in India.
  • Outlining the broader build‑out, the minister referenced 10 announced semiconductor units—two fabs and eight ATMP sites—with CG Semi in Sanand slated to create the first made‑in‑India chip and two Gujarat ATMP lines expected to begin pilot production soon.
  • He added that India will host an AI Impact Summit in February 2026 as the government engages with partners such as ASML, IBM Albany and IMEC and readies ISM 2.0 with a focus on equipment and materials.
