ARM Opens Bengaluru 2 nm Chip Design Office, Signaling India’s Next Semiconductor Milestone

Government backing alongside a growing talent pipeline is driving a shift from mature nodes to advanced chip design.

Overview

  • Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated ARM’s new Bengaluru facility on September 16 to focus on next‑generation 2 nm chip design.
  • Officials say a 2 nm chip is being designed in India for the first time to power AI, mobile computing and high‑performance systems.
  • The India Semiconductor Mission counts 10 approved projects across six states totaling about Rs 1.6 lakh crore, supported by a Rs 76,000 crore outlay.
  • Under the DLI scheme, 23 design projects have been cleared, 72 companies use advanced EDA tools, and students have taped out 28 chips across 25 institutions with 278 campuses engaged.
  • The 2 nm push builds on May openings of 3 nm design centers in Noida and Bengaluru, extending progress from earlier 7 nm and 5 nm work.
