Arkansas Man Arrested for Attempted Ramming of South Carolina Nuclear Power Plant, Charges Include Attempted Murder

66-year-old suspect, Doyle Wayne Whisenhunt, arrested in South Carolina was also charged for a separate hit-and-run incident the same day; no evidence of domestic terroristic motive found.

  • Doyle Wayne Whisenhunt, a 66-year-old from Lockesburg, Arkansas, has been arrested on charges of attempted murder, malicious injury to personal property, and unlawful entry. He allegedly drove a silver 2002 Toyota Camry through security gates at the Oconee Nuclear Station in South Carolina and attempted to hit security guards.
  • The incident occurred around 8 p.m., wherein Whisenhunt drove through the facility's exit gates. After hitting pop-up barricades activated by the plant's security, he backed his vehicle and attempted to drive down a dirt road. His vehicle was blocked by Duke Energy security but managed to drive through a fence.
  • Whisenhunt then escaped into the nearby Pickens County. Upon entering a property, shots were fired, although it's unclear who fired the shots. Neither the security officers nor deputies used their weapons.
  • Separate from the nuclear plant incident, Whisenhunt was also charged with a hit-and-run from earlier the same evening. His car was found abandoned in the woods near the vicinity of the nuclear plant.
  • Despite the severity of the incident, there is no evidence suggesting domestic terroristic intent. Authorities are continuing to investigate the motives behind Whisenhunt's actions.
