Arkansas Fires Sam Pittman and Names Bobby Petrino Interim Head Coach

Arkansas opens a national coaching search that will include Petrino as a candidate.

Overview

  • Arkansas dismissed Sam Pittman a day after a 56-13 home loss to Notre Dame, ending his tenure with a 32-34 record.
  • Offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino was appointed interim head coach for the rest of the season, and with a bye this week his first game will be Oct. 11 at Tennessee.
  • Athletic director Hunter Yurachek said the school is launching an immediate national search that will consider Petrino for the permanent role.
  • Petrino previously went 34-17 at Arkansas from 2008–11 before being fired for cause in 2012 after a motorcycle crash revealed an undisclosed relationship and a $20,000 gift to a staffer.
  • Donor influence is already shaping the conversation, with The Athletic reporting key backers — including Jerry Jones — favor SMU coach Rhett Lashlee for the job.
