Arizona’s 7th District Votes in Special Election to Succeed Raúl Grijalva

Arizona’s recount threshold could delay a call in the majority-Hispanic border district.

Overview

  • Polls close Tuesday at 7 p.m. local time (10 p.m. ET), with results not released before 11 p.m. ET.
  • Democrat Adelita Grijalva, a former Pima County supervisor and the late congressman’s daughter, faces Republican Daniel Butierez, a contractor and small business owner.
  • The district spans parts of six counties from Yuma to Tucson, is majority Hispanic, and gives Democrats nearly a 2-to-1 registration edge over Republicans.
  • Grijalva entered Election Day with a sizable cash advantage after raising about $1.3 million, compared with roughly $72,000 raised and $136,000 loaned by Butierez.
  • The winner will serve the final 15 months of the term, modestly narrowing the GOP’s 219–213 House majority, and any margin at or below 0.5% would trigger an automatic recount under Arizona law.
