Arizona Snowbowl Opens a Day Early, Then Adds Terrain for Official Start

A five-day, 37-inch storm made conditions good enough to launch the season ahead of schedule.

Overview

  • Snowbowl began operations at noon Thursday with a bonus day, opening the Arizona Gondola until 4 p.m. for access to select advanced runs.
  • Guest services at Hart Prairie Lodge and rentals with the Agassiz Lodge Pro Shop opened at 11:30 a.m., with the Agassiz Lodge Restaurant and Bar opening at noon.
  • Drivers were advised that chains or four-wheel drive were required on Snowbowl Road because shuttles were not running on Thursday.
  • Local retailers in Flagstaff rushed to flip inventory for the influx of visitors, with one shop owner estimating about 90% of customers come from out of town.
  • For Friday’s official opening, operations expanded with the Grand Canyon Express running for intermediate and advanced terrain, following additional overnight snowfall reported by ski media.
