Arizona Opens New Year Fireworks Window With Strict Limits on Devices, Hours and Locations

Fire officials urge compliance due to injury risks, fire danger, plus pollution concerns.

Overview

  • Consumer fireworks use is legal statewide from Dec. 26 through Jan. 4, following weeks of retail sales leading up to the holiday.
  • Permitted items are non‑aerial consumer fireworks such as fountains, ground spinners, sparklers and toy smoke devices.
  • Use is barred from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., except on Dec. 31 when fireworks are allowed from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.
  • Fireworks are prohibited within one mile of mountain preserves, regional or desert parks, conservation areas and national forests, and cities can set stricter rules.
  • Phoenix fire officials say devices that shoot into the air or explode are illegal in the city and are linked to fires, injuries and New Year’s pollution spikes, including a west Phoenix monitor that ranked among the world’s worst last Jan. 1.
