Avery, previously charged with assaulting several women near ASU, admitted he intended to 'rape' a female inmate.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when Avery crawled 'like a spider' to reach the sleeping woman, lowering his pants before being stopped by another inmate's scream.
Avery faces additional charges of attempted sexual assault and aggravated assault against a correctional facility employee.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has enhanced security measures, including adding mirrors to monitor blind spots, to prevent future incidents.
