Arizona Death-Row Prisoner Apologizes, Declines Clemency Ahead of Oct. 17 Execution

The scheduled execution would be Arizona’s second this year following the state’s recent resumption of capital punishment.

Overview

  • In a handwritten note, Richard Djerf, 55, apologized for the pain he caused and wrote, "If I can’t find reason to spare my life, what reason would anyone else have?"
  • Djerf confirmed he will not seek relief from the state clemency board, and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, which sought the execution warrant, declined to comment on his statement.
  • He pleaded guilty to murdering Albert Luna Sr., Patricia Luna, 18-year-old Rochelle, and 5-year-old Damien in their Phoenix home on September 14, 1993, and was sentenced to death.
  • Prosecutors say he targeted the family in revenge tied to a theft he blamed on Albert Luna Jr., while Djerf’s note says Albert Jr. was an innocent victim who discovered the aftermath.
  • Arizona reports 108 prisoners on death row; the state last carried out an execution in mid-March when it put Aaron Brian Gunches to death.
