Argentine Tech Entrepreneur Identified in Fatal 2,000-Foot Fall on Mount Shasta

Officials say clouds reduced visibility, leading to an off‑route glissade on the Wintun Glacier.

  • The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as Matias Augusto Travizano, 45, who fell on Sept. 12 after summiting via the Clear Creek route.
  • During the descent, poor visibility contributed to the party veering off trail and becoming stranded near 13,500 feet on the northern tip of the Wintun Glacier.
  • Travizano attempted to glissade to lower terrain, lost control, struck a boulder, briefly regained consciousness, then slipped again and fell to about 10,200 feet where a CHP helicopter later located his body.
  • A rescue operation began around 2:30 p.m. involving Siskiyou County Search and Rescue, U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers, and CHP Northern Air Operations, with recovery completed the following day.
  • Authorities report this is the second Mount Shasta climbing fatality this year and note 15 rescue missions so far, while reiterating warnings about route-finding, rapidly changing weather, and the dangers of glissading.
