Argentine Observatories Count Over 200 Gender Killings in 2025, Challenging Government Claims

Researchers report harsher methods with greater firearm use, urging an emergency response on gender violence.

Overview

  • The Mumalá observatory tallies 211 femicides and transfemicides from January 1 to October 30, about one every 34 hours, along with 855 attempted killings.
  • Ahora Que Sí Nos Ven reports 208 femicides and travesticides in the same span, with 315 attempts and a rate of one victim every 36 hours in October.
  • Mumalá describes increasing cruelty, more concealment and instances of torture, and links the rise in gun use to the presidential decree that eliminated the national firearms control agency.
  • Both groups underscore very low prior reporting by victims — 14% to 17% — and limited protections, with only 28% of those who had reported having a panic button.
  • The findings contradict public remarks by Security Minister Patricia Bullrich that femicides fell, as the organizations call for a declared Emergency in Gender Violence.
