Argentine Deputies Face Push To Tighten Oath Rules After Contentious Swearing-In

Two projects would confine responses to rulebook formulas, empowering the presiding officer to withhold incorporation for noncompliance.

Overview

  • Following a December 3 ceremony where many deputies added political or personal messages to their oaths, the lower house is now considering rule changes to restrict the practice.
  • Outgoing PRO deputy Gerardo Milman denounced what he called xenophobic and antisemitic expressions and filed a resolution to limit oaths strictly to the formulas in the chamber’s regulations.
  • La Libertad Avanza deputy Sabrina Ajmechet proposed amending Article 12 to prohibit any additions, require the chair to demand conformity, repeat the oath until correct, and delay incorporation for refusals.
  • Article 10 of the Reglamento sets four permitted formulas invoking the Constitution, God, the Homeland, and the Holy Gospels, with the prescribed response “Sí, juro.”
  • The December 3 session featured boos and floor confrontations and included leftist deputies invoking a free Palestine with “from the river to the sea,” which other lawmakers characterized as antisemitic; the proposals are now under debate with no change enacted yet.
