Argentine 30-Day Peso Deposit Rates Surge Toward 50% After Reserve Rule Shift

Banks lifted deposit offers after the central bank tightened reserves with daily encaje calculations.

Overview

  • BCRA data published on August 28 show a broad jump in 30-day plazo fijo rates to around 50% TNA, up from roughly 27%–29% only weeks ago.
  • Top posted offers include Banco CMF at 55%, Meridian near 54.25%, and several at 54% such as Bica, VOII, Reba and Provincia de Tierra del Fuego, with Macro at 53.5% and Mariva at 53%.
  • Public banks trail the leaders, with Banco Nación at 47%, and simulators indicate higher yields for homebanking than in-branch placements as digital channels pay more.
  • Outlets link the repricing to BCRA moves that raised reserve requirements and shifted encaje calculation to a daily basis, tightening liquidity and pointing to costlier credit.
  • At 50% TNA the monthly return is about 4.2%, beating July’s 1.9% inflation, while platforms such as Cuenta DNI promote near-52% and report strong new participation.
