Argentina’s Wheat Harvest Sets Record as Early Tests Flag Lower Protein

Competitive pricing after duty cuts is propelling record December shipments.

Overview

  • The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange raised its 2025/26 wheat production estimate to 27.1 million tonnes on yields far above prior benchmarks.
  • Rosario’s grain exchange projects about 2.48 million tonnes of wheat will ship in December, a record for the month, with sizable volumes to Indonesia, Vietnam and China in addition to Brazil.
  • A preliminary Rosario quality survey in Subregion II Norte found average protein at 9.6% with most samples classified as Grade 2 and a mean test weight of 79.4 kg/hl.
  • Santa Fe laboratory results show protein averaging 9.7–10.4%, triggering standard discounts of roughly 2% and challenging exporters that commonly commit to about 10.5% protein.
  • Decree 877/2025 cut export duties to 7.5% for wheat grain, 3.5% for flour and 2% for semolina, boosting commercialization, while a new Rosario lab accelerated the release of quality data.
