Argentina’s Teacher Unions Set Oct. 14 National Strike After Oct. 8 Day of Protest

The action presses for reopening national bargaining, restoration of FONID and a new education financing law.

Overview

  • CTERA called a 24-hour nationwide teachers’ strike with a Marcha Federal Educativa on Tuesday, October 14, following a National Day of Protest on Wednesday with public classes, open radios, caravans and events across the country.
  • Amsafe confirmed it will join the strike and outlined protests in Santa Fe, Rosario and Reconquista on October 8, citing closed provincial bargaining by decree and a loss of more than 30% of teachers’ purchasing power since December 2023.
  • The Frente de Unidad Docente Bonaerense, which includes AMET, FEB, SADOP, SUTEBA and UDOCBA, endorsed the national action to elevate provincial demands before the national government.
  • Local coverage in La Plata reported that schools there will halt classes on October 14 as part of the nationwide stoppage tied to the march in Buenos Aires.
  • Union leaders say the mobilization to the capital will draw thousands and emphasize salary recomposition, the return of the FONID incentive and passage of a stronger education financing law.
