Argentina’s Student Day Is Not a National Holiday

A Buenos Aires education order will suspend classes for secondary and higher levels, creating localized school breaks for affected students.

Overview

  • National authorities have not declared September 21 a feriado nacional, so businesses and most public services will operate on normal schedules.
  • The Buenos Aires Dirección General de Cultura y Educación confirmed that Monday 21 September will be an asueto for secondary schools, higher education and several special modalities.
  • Children in initial and primary schools in Buenos Aires must attend classes as usual and universities will set their own schedules, with some institutions choosing to remain open.
  • Some municipalities such as Loma Verde and Miramar have local holidays on Friday 18 September, which combined with the provincial asueto can give some residents a four-day break.
  • The date honors Domingo F. Sarmiento and was fixed by student leaders in 1902, and this year the traditional spring celebrations fall near the astronomical equinox on September 22.
