Argentina’s September Tourism Gap Widens to US$389.5 Million as Outbound Travel Jumps

Analysts warn the widening tourism gap is undermining efforts to rebuild foreign reserves.

Overview

  • INDEC reported 706,400 residents traveled abroad in September, up 21.8% year over year, while 374,800 non-residents entered, down 18.9%.
  • Argentines spent about US$598 million overseas versus US$208.5 million spent by foreign visitors in Argentina, producing the US$389.5 million monthly deficit.
  • Equilibra’s Lorenzo Sigaut Gravina projects a 2025 tourism balance shortfall of roughly US$10–12 billion, noting the gap is growing month by month.
  • Complementary counts cited by Página|12 show 1.2 million resident departures versus 642,400 inbound visitors, a net shortfall of 562,200 people when tourists and excursionists are included.
  • Incoming travel remains concentrated from neighboring countries, with Brazil, Uruguay and Chile leading shares and most entries via air through Ezeiza and Aeroparque or by land and river crossings.
