Argentina’s Public Workforce Shrinks by Nearly 60,000 Under Milei Over Two Years

The administration cites 3.41 trillion pesos in annual savings from the downsizing.

Overview

  • Official INDEC data show the national payroll fell by 59,688 positions, a 17.5% decline, to 281,785 posts by November 2025.
  • Decree 934/2025 extends the public hiring freeze with narrow exceptions and requires two prior separations for each permitted hire.
  • In proportional terms the centralized administration contracted the most at 28.8% (about 15,780 fewer posts), while state firms absorbed the largest absolute cuts.
  • State companies saw major reductions including Correo Argentino (-5,191 jobs, 30.8%), Operadora Ferroviaria (-3,504), Banco Nación (-2,010) and Aerolíneas Argentinas (-1,913).
  • Agency closures advanced the retrenchment as ENOHSA and INADI were dissolved with functions folded into ministries, and congressional budget data show real declines in public wage outlays across all branches.
