Argentina's Private Registered Employment Falls to Its Lowest Recent Level

June 2026 official data show sustained losses that are shifting salaried formal work toward independent monotributo contracts concentrated in oil and mining provinces.

Overview

  • The June 2026 report recorded a monthly drop of 6,261 private registered jobs and left total private salaried employment at 6,126,400, extending a contraction that has produced a cumulative loss of about 246,312 jobs since November 2023.
  • Job losses are heavily concentrated: the provinces of Buenos Aires, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Santa Fe account for roughly 68.8% of the total decline, while only Neuquén and Río Negro exceed their November 2023 employment levels.
  • The biggest sectoral cuts have fallen on construction, manufacturing and mining‑related activities, with construction down about 14.2% and manufacturing down about 7.4% since November 2023.
  • The number of registered firms has fallen sharply, by roughly 31,342 since November 2023, while the pool of monotributistas (formal independent workers) continues to grow as salaried positions shrink.
  • Real pay is weakening: average private registered wages fell about 2.8% year‑on‑year and half of formal private workers take home less than an estimated ARS 1.385 million, a level below basic consumption benchmarks that risks cutting household demand and slowing private job creation.
