Argentina’s Private Payrolls Fall Again as July Dismissals Hit Highest Level Since 2016

Survey data confirm a fresh monthly contraction in registered private jobs, with only modest offsets from public hiring plus monotributo.

  • Official SIPA records show private registered employment fell by about 12,150 positions in June (-0.2%) to 6,256,097, the sharpest monthly drop since early 2024, while public payrolls added roughly 7,824 jobs and monotributo registrations rose by about 12,500.
  • In July, the EIL reported a 0.2% monthly and annual decline in registered private employment at firms with more than 10 workers across both Greater Buenos Aires and interior agglomerates, with industry steady and the steepest falls in construction and financial services (-0.5%).
  • The July dismissal rate reached 0.6 per 100 workers, the highest reading for that month since 2016, as the exit rate rose to 2.0 versus a steady 1.8 entry rate; suspended employment ticked up to 0.4 per 100 and 6.0% of firms applied suspensions.
  • Sectoral and regional pressures persisted in June, with nine branches cutting headcount—largest drops in fishing (-4.9%), mining (-1.1%) and transport/communications (-0.6%)—and 18 provinces posting declines, while San Juan and Formosa were among a few with gains (+0.4%).
  • Private wages in June showed strong year-over-year gains—average gross $2,380,439 (+46.2%) and median $1,876,003 (+49%)—outpacing 39.4% inflation, with officials noting continued real pay improvement into July.
