Argentina's President-Elect Milei Chooses Luis Caputo as Economy Minister

Milei's U.S. Trip Focuses on Foreign Policy Reset and Economic Crisis Management

  • Argentina's President-elect Javier Milei has chosen Luis Caputo, a former finance minister and Central Bank chief, as his economy minister. Caputo is known for his expertise in markets and was part of the team that accompanied Milei to the United States.
  • Milei, a libertarian, has been building a more orthodox team to manage Argentina’s economy, which is currently suffering from an annual inflation rate of 143%.
  • During his recent trip to the U.S., Milei met with top U.S. officials and his economic team held discussions with IMF officers. The meetings were aimed at formulating a plan to reshape Argentina's foreign policy and lead its economy out of crisis.
  • Milei's foreign policy is pro-United States and pro-Israel, with a cooler stance on top trade partners Brazil and China. He has also pledged not to join the China-led BRICS trade group.
  • Milei's economic advisers also met with senior U.S. finance officials to discuss the incoming administration’s economic policy priorities. Milei's economic plans include fiscal adjustment, monetary reform, state reform and deregulation.
