Argentina’s Official Dollar Hits ARS 1,465 as FX Band Ceiling Looms

The central bank is deploying Treasury dollar sales alongside lower simultáneas rates to steady trading as the official rate nears its band ceiling.

Overview

  • Banco Nación’s screen shows ARS 1,465 for sales on September 14, leaving the official rate just shy of the band top near ARS 1,471–1,472.
  • Major banks told the regulator they will open Monday with retail dollar prices around ARS 1,460–1,475, including Nación and Galicia at ARS 1,465 and Macro at ARS 1,475.
  • The blue dollar traded near ARS 1,425 on Sunday, leaving a rare negative spread versus the official rate.
  • Since September 1 the BCRA has been selling Treasury-held dollars in the MULC, with reported international reserves at about US$40.309 billion.
  • The BCRA cut the rate on simultáneas to 40% from 45%, a move that lifted short-term peso debt prices and sought to ease market strains.
