Argentina’s July Tourism Gap Widens as Record Resident Departures Meet Slump in Foreign Arrivals

Overview

  • INDEC reported 1,558,500 resident departures versus 704,000 foreign arrivals in July, leaving a net gap of 854,500 visitors.
  • Argentines spent an estimated US$576.6 million abroad in July while inbound visitors brought in about US$220.4 million, producing a tourism dollar deficit near US$356 million.
  • Outbound tourism totaled 843,100 residents (+26.5% year over year) and inbound tourists were 427,200 (−16% year over year), marking the strongest July for emisivo since 2017 and the weakest July for receptivo since 2022.
  • From January to July, resident departures reached 12.5 million versus 5.1 million non‑resident arrivals, pushing the cumulative deficit above 7.4 million visitors.
  • Most outbound trips went to neighboring countries (70.2%), led by Brazil (23%), Chile (18.1%) and Paraguay (15%), with air and land crossings each used by roughly 46% of resident tourists.
