Argentina’s July Tourism Data Show Sharp Visitor Deficit and Dollar Outflow

The INDEC report highlights an exchange-rate pull that favors outbound travel, raising concern for Central Bank reserves.

Overview

  • In July, 1,558,500 residents traveled abroad (+30.9% year over year) versus 704,000 foreign arrivals (-26.6%), leaving a gap of 854,500 visitors.
  • Outbound spending totaled about US$576.6 million, while inbound contributed roughly US$32.0 million, for a monthly tourism deficit near US$356 million.
  • From January to July, 12.5 million Argentines departed compared with 5.1 million non-resident arrivals, a cumulative shortfall exceeding 7.4 million visitors.
  • Travel was concentrated in neighboring routes, with 70.2% of outbound trips to Brazil (23%), Chile (18.1%) and Paraguay (15%).
  • Economists project a full-year tourism deficit of roughly US$10–12 billion, warning of additional strain on Banco Central reserves.
