Argentina’s Informal Work Rises to 43.2% in Q2, With Salaried Non-Registration at 17-Year High

Youth face a 63% informal rate, underscoring the tight link between precarious jobs and poverty.

Overview

  • Unregistered employees reached 37.7% of wage earners—the highest since 2008 except Q2 2022—with salaried workers accounting for 63% of all informal jobs.
  • Informality increased 1.6 percentage points versus Q2 2024, while the salaried segment rose 1.4 points, per EDIL/IIEP analysis of INDEC’s EPH.
  • Regional gaps are wide: the NOA is near 50% and Cuyo and the Nordeste exceed 48%, while Patagonia shows the lowest rates; domestic work and construction register about 75% informality.
  • Vulnerability is acute: 42% of informal workers live in poor households and 40% earn below the basic basket, compared with 12% and 5% among registered workers.
  • Economists say the rise reflects prolonged stagnation and rigid labor rules, prompting calls to modernize collective bargaining and provincial labor justice.
